National experts gather to discuss reforms of legal capacity law to empower people with disabilities

FRA will host an expert seminar on ‘Future perspectives on legal capacity law’ in Dublin in partnership with the Irish Department of Justice and Equality, the Irish Human Rights Commission and the Irish Equality Authority, on 9 October.

The seminar will bring together Ministry of Justice specialists from each EU Member State to discuss in concrete and practical terms the obligations deriving from Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the legislative reforms underway or planned across EU Member States. FRA’s report on legal capacity, which will be presented at the seminar, will provide an overview of the current legal situation in the European Union.  Member State representatives will illustrate the different aspects of reform processes taking place in the EU by giving examples of what is happening in their countries. Participants will also discuss in depth the issues that need to be addressed to give supported decision-making a clear and effective legislative basis. French and German versions of the FRA report and accompanying easy read version will be made available on 9 October.
