Committee of the Regions and FRA discuss the role of local and regional authorities in protecting the rule of law

FRA and the EU’s Committee of the Regions will hold their Annual dialogue in Brussels on 16 June.

Following the recent publication of the Commission’s communication on a new EU Framework to strengthen the rule of law, the meeting will look at how local and regional authorities can further contribute to ensure a multi-level approach to safeguard the rule of law and fundamental rights in the EU.

In its 2013 Annual Report, FRA underlined the key role of local and regional authorities in the implementation of fundamental rights. FRA’s research has identified a number of steps that can be taken to enhance the implementation of fundamental rights at local and regional levels which have been compiled into an online toolkit ‘Joining up fundamental rights’ for officials working at all levels of government. Building upon examples and innovative practices, participants will explore possible next steps to further enhance efforts to protect and promote fundamental rights.
