On 4 October, FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty addressed the Rapporteur Group on External Relations of the Committee of Ministers at the Council of Europe. He stressed the importance of cooperation between the two bodies at a time when human rights are under increasing pressure.
On 29 September, FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty gave a keynote speech at Equinet’s Annual General Meeting. He emphasised the fact that strong and independent Equality Bodies are needed more than ever at present as the EU struggles in the face of a crisis of values.
The FRA Director, Michael O’Flaherty, met representatives of the French government, its national parliament, national independent institutions and civil society organisations in Paris from 19 to 20 September.
On 22 September, the Agency met with Council of Europe officials in Strasbourg and discussed synergies and the complementarity of FRA’s Fundamental Rights Report and the Council of Europe Report on the State of Democracy, Human Rights and the Rule of Law that are produced each year.
The Agency gave a speech on improving the legal protection, reporting and recording of hate crime in the EU at the conference ‘Hate Crime and Hate Speech in popular politics: the roles of criminal justice agencies’ in Belfast on 21-22 September 2016.
