The washed-up image of the drowned Syrian boy Alan Kurdi on 2 September last year provoked international outcry. It helped focus attention on the refugee situation. One year on, still more needs to be done to better protect refugee children, says FRA.
On 6 August, the FRA Director Michael O Flaherty joined Commissioner Jourová during the Europride 2016 festival as part of the launch of the EU campaign to raise awareness and increase the social acceptance of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex (LGBTI) people.
FRA joined international decision-makers at the annual European Forum Alpbach for the first time for a rich diversity of talks on values and human rights from 28 to 30 August, under the ‘new enlightment’ motto of this year’s event. Since 1945, the Forum has been an annual international and interdisciplinary platform that brings together the worlds of science, politics, business and culture.
On 23 August, FRA addressed a Ministerial Conference in Bratislava marking European Day of Remembrance for Victims of Totalitarian Regimes. The conference was organised by the Slovak Presidency of the Council of the EU.
