Severe labour exploitation of migrant workers is a reality, now, in Europe and in the twenty-first century. The extreme form this can take was tragically demonstrated this week, when migrant strawberry pickers in Greece were shot at by their employers for simply asking to be paid.
FRA took part in panel discussion on asylum together with the UNHCR, a German MP and the Director of Pro Asyl during an event organised by the German Institute for Human Rights and by Forum Menschenrechte to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration on human rights.
FRA presented the findings from its research on fundamental rights at the EU’s southern sea borders to the European Home Affairs Commissioner, Cecilia Malmström, on 25 March. The findings were contained in a report which FRA will make public on 27 March.
