The Austrian Judge at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in Luxembourg, Maria Berger, visited the FRA on 9 January and gave a presentation to staff on "The Fundamental Rights Charter in light of the case-law of the EU Court of Justice".
She gave an overview of the evolution of fundamental rights judicial protection in the European Union and explained how the legally-binding Charter has an impact on the work of the Court.
Judge Maria Berger became a member of the European Parliament in 1996. In January 2007 she was appointed as Austrian Justice Minister. She has been a Judge at the ECJ since October 2009.
