New Commissioner for Human Rights reaffirms commitment to close cooperation with the FRA

The new Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Nils Muižnieks, visited the FRA today to present his priorities after taking office less than two months ago.

"Over the years, the Council of Europe and the FRA have worked closely together building on our respective strengths to enhance human rights across Europe," said FRA Director, Morten Kjaerum. "I look forward to continuing this regular dialogue and close cooperation."

"The full enjoyment of human rights is essential in times of economic crisis and austerity measures as well. The close cooperation and complementarity achieved between the FRA and the Council of Europe help us reach this aim," said Commissioner Muižnieks.

The FRA coordinates its activities with those of the Council of Europe, particularly with regard to the agency's Annual Work Programme and its cooperation with civil society.

The Council of Europe has appointed an independent expert to sit on the FRA Management Board who also attends meetings of the FRA Executive Board.

Apart from its close cooperation with the Commissioner for Human Rights, the FRA regularly cooperates closely with the many bodies of the Council of Europe.
