Children and justice project update

FRA’s children and justice project looks at the treatment of children in national justice systems in 10 EU Member States.

This was an area flagged as being of concern in the EU’s Agenda for the Rights of the Child. Interviews with professionals have already identified different practices of involving children in criminal and civil judicial proceedings. This information will be complemented by interviews with children about their experiences in judicial proceedings, as a witness, victim or party to the proceedings. The preparatory phase has now been finalised. The purpose was to identify appropriate channels to reach children as well as to develop and test how the research will be carried out. Interviews with children will start at the beginning of 2014. This research will lead to a broader assessment of the impact on various practices of involving children in judicial proceedings. This also will help identify promising practices as well as areas for improvement.
