Expert meeting on biometrics in visa, borders and asylum databases

On 17 September the expert meeting on biometric data in large visa, borders and asylum databases (EURODAC, VIS and SIS II) took place at FRA.

The meeting sought to gather input from a variety of experts and stakeholders representing EU Member States, academia, NGOs and the security perspectives for a future FRA project on this topic. The meeting examined the processes for collection, storage and usage of biometrics in these three databases from a fundamental rights perspective. A number of fundamental rights issues with implications for the data subject or other individuals were identified. The various perspectives reflected through the discussions on the topic will provide valuable contributions for the further development of the focus and methodology of the planned FRA project, which is foreseen to start in 2014.
