Tackling fundamental rights challenges at sea: The EU response

Irregular migrants arriving at the EU’s sea borders may pose humanitarian challenges to Member States bordering the Mediterranean. However, the effects may be felt all across the EU. FRA’s latest report “EU solidarity and Frontex: fundamental rights challenges”, focuses on the fundamental rights challenges of handling irregular arrivals by sea.

Given the legal ambiguity that may surround irregular arrivals, this report takes a look at the fundamental rights perspective and reviews what the EU is doing as a whole to support those countries that are most affected. This includes EU funding, relocating migrants from one EU Member State to another and operational support from the EU borders agency, Frontex.
