FRA condemns shocking attack on human rights defender

The EU Agency for Fundamental Rights deplores the shocking attack on Krassimir Kanev, a leading Bulgarian human rights defender. Two attackers assaulted the Chair of the Bulgarian Helsinki Committee and FRA Management Board member on 27 October outside his hotel in Sofia and then fled.

The perpetrators of this despicable act need to be urgently brought to account,” says Agency Management Board Chair Frauke Lisa Seidensticker. “With intolerance  on the rise, every effort must be made to halt this plague on society and attacks on those, like Krassimir Kanev, who valiantly fight for human rights.

Frontline human defenders are too often victims of heinous criminal attacks for standing up for the legitimate rights of everyday people whoever they are,” added Agency Director Michael O’Flaherty. “The Agency strongly condemns the assault on Krassimir Kanev. We will continue to work hand-in-hand with all those who are actively fighting to promote and protect human rights.

The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee is the largest organisation for protecting human rights in Bulgaria. It strives to promote respect for human rights of every individual across the country.
