Countering the shrinking space for Europe’s civil society

FRA’s Director spoke about civil society’s pivotal role in upholding fundamental rights, democracy and the rule of law at a public lecture in Dublin on 26 May.

He drew on the Agency’s research which has shown how an increasing number of civil society organisations within the EU are reporting legal, political and financial restrictions on their work. He underlined that for a flourishing civil society, we need for fair laws, more funding and an understanding that less space for civil society organisations risks our civil liberties. He also spoke of the Agency’s continuing commitment to enabling and protecting civil society, particularly through its well-established fundamental rights platform.

The event was hosted by Front Line Defenders in collaboration with UCD Centre for Human Rights.
