Experts discuss protecting children with disabilities from sexual abuse

On 30 January, the Agency took part in a European Commission expert workshop on the implementation of the child sexual abuse directive with regards to children with disabilities.

FRA drew on findings from its reports on violence against children with disabilities as well as on child-friendly justice – both now also available in easy read formats - in which children with disabilities and child victims of sexual abuse were interviewed.

The discussions in the working groups aimed at specifying risks children with disabilities face in the family and social environment. They also identified what should be done to prevent abuse, protect children and prosecute perpetrators. Promising practices from Member States were also flagged. Participants included representatives from the European Commission, EU Member States in the field of law enforcement and child protection, EU Agencies and the European Disabilities Forum.

The event took place in Brussels on 30 January 2018.
