Statement on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

FRA Director Morten Kjaerum, "On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we are reminded that disability remains a reality for many people. Persons with intellectual disabilities are among the most vulnerable of the disabled.  Yet fundamental rights abuses against persons with intellectual disabilities are under-documented and little understood.  There is a real need for policymakers to be better informed about the day-to-day realities for persons with intellectual disabilities.  In recognition of this, the FRA is embarking on a new research project, which will critically explore the links between legislation, policy and practice in the intellectual disability context. The results of this research will be published in 2010."
