EU Side Event at the OSCE Human Dimension Implementation Meeting (06/10/2009)

Co-hosted with the Swedish Presidency of the EU, FRA organised a side-event on "Freedom of Expression on the Internet - possibilities and challenges". Freedom of expression on the Internet is topical throughout the OSCE region, and also one of the priority areas of the Swedish Presidency of the European Union. As a traditional human right, freedom of expression is in many ways being reshaped with the development of new technologies. Modern developments on the Internet challenge, yet also enable freedom of expression.

EU Fundamental Rights Agency presents its Annual Report 2009: Member States must close gaps in legal protection

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) released on 24 June its Annual Report 2009. The report covers information, events and developments on fundamental rights in the European Union for the year 2008. The Agency's research shows that alarmingly few people are aware of their rights and where to report incidents of discrimination. Poor data collection in the EU-27 continues to hamper the implementation of effective policies to combat discrimination, whilst gaps in legal protection ensure that discrimination continues to thrive in certain areas.

Conference on New Technical Surveillance Measures and the Protection of Fundamental Rights

The Association of Austrian Judges and the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) organised a Conference in Vienna on June 19th, 2009.
The conference addresses the challenges posed to fundamental rights by new technical surveillance tools. A growing reliance on such technologies gives greater powers to the controlling institution. The role of the judiciary is therefore a key part of this discussion. Regulation and use of such technologies is increasingly determined by measures adopted at the European or international level, making it especially necessary for judges from different Member States to meet and exchange experiences. The Association of Austrian Judges, in collaboration with the FRA, invited judges from all EU Member States to participate in this discussion.

New FRA report examines discrimination against Muslims: Under-reporting of incidents and lack of trust in public authorities

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) released on Thursday 28 May a report on discrimination against Muslims in the EU. The results for Muslim respondents indicate similarly high levels of discrimination and victimisation as for other minority groups surveyed. Many racist incidents are not reported to the police or to any other organisation. Knowledge of anti-discrimination legislation is low, and there is a lack of trust in complaints mechanisms.

FRA launches its new logo

FRA is pleased to announce the launch of its new logo, following a period of internal restructuring after the arrival of its new Director. The logo demonstrates that human issues are at the heart of the Agency’s work, depicting two non-gender specific persons to symbolise this. In keeping with FRA’s status as a European Union Agency, the logo also incorporates both the stars and colours of the European flag.

EU-MIDIS: FRA survey sheds new light on extent of racism in the EU

FRA released results of the first ever EU-wide survey on immigrant and ethnic minority groups’ experiences of discrimination and racist crime. The survey reveals that discrimination, harassment and racially motivated violence are far more widespread than recorded in official statistics. The results suggest a sense of resignation among ethnic minorities and immigrants who appear to lack confidence in mechanisms to protect victims.
