EU LGBT survey

A summary of the results of the EU's largest online survey into the experiences of discrimination and violence by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

Over 93,000 people completed the survey1.

47% of respondents had personally felt discriminated against or harassed on the grounds of sexual orientation in the year preseding the survey.

66% of all respondents across all EU Member States were scared of holding hands in public.

75% of gay and busexual respondents across all EU Member States were scared of holding hands in public.

19% of respondents felt discriminated against at work or when looking for a job, despite legal protection under EU law.

80% of respondents recall negative comments or bullying of LGBT youth at school.

In the last five years, 26% of all respondents had been attacked or threatened with violence. This figure rises to 35% among transgender respondents.

Only 22% of the most serious hate crime incidents were brought to the attention of the police.
