Racism, discrimination, intolerance and extremism: Learning from experiences in Greece and Hungary
Racism, discrimination, extremism and intolerance currently pose a great challenge for the European Union. In a new report, the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights examines the responses of two Member States, taking these countries as case studies to demonstrate the need for more targeted and effective measures to combat these phenomena throughout the EU. The report ends by proposing a number of steps to improve the situation.

Combating hate crime in the EU: Giving hate crime victims a face and a voice
The EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) holds its annual high level Fundamental Rights Conference in Vilnius on 12-13 November. This year’s conference focuses on ‘Combating hate crime in the EU’ and is being hosted in cooperation with the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU.

Combating antisemitism: more targeted measures needed
FRA is today presenting the first comparable figures on Jewish people’s experiences of antisemitic harassment, discrimination and hate crime in the EU. On 8 November, the eve of the anniversary of the anti-Jewish pogroms that took place 75 years ago, it needs to be acknowledged that while Member States have made sustained efforts to combat antisemitism, the phenomenon is still widespread.

Tragic reminder off coast of Italy of Europe’s need to address asylum and migration
The recent tragedy off Italy in which at least 92 people have died after a boat carrying African migrants sank, underscores why all possible efforts should be made to reduce the need for people to take such dangerous journeys, given the high risks of sea crossings.

Maltese migrant dilemma points to urgent need for clearer disembarkation rules, says FRA
On 4 August, 102 people, including four pregnant women, one injured woman as well as a five-month old baby were rescued by a tanker, the M/V SALAMIS, in the Libyan search and rescue area.

FRA is on a good track, finds external evaluation
The Council Working Party on Fundamental Rights, Citizens Rights and Free Movement of Persons (FREMP) discussed the results of FRA’s independent external evaluation on 9 July. The FRA Management Board’s recommendations resulting from this evaluation were also discussed. The Chairperson of the FRA Management Board, Maija Sakslin, and FRA Director, Morten Kjaerum, took part in the meeting.

Fear, isolation and discrimination common in Europe’s LGBT community
The EU’s largest LGBT hate crime and discrimination online survey ever conducted shows that many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people cannot be themselves in their daily lives. Many hide their identity and live in isolation or even fear. Others experience discrimination, and even violence, when being themselves.
