Protecting media freedom and journalists’ safety

On 24 February, FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty spoke at the UN-EU high-level policy dialogue on protecting the safety of journalists, media freedom and pluralism in the European Union.

The event took place in Brussels.

In his speech, he stressed that more cooperation is needed to safeguard media freedom at all levels. He presented the results of the Agency’s 2019 Fundamental Rights Survey related to media freedom: on average 75% of people in Europe think that free media is important, but the figure is much lower in some countries.

He also highlighted some FRA actions to support free media, such as carrying out EU-wide surveys or improving access to FRA data for data journalists.
