“I am deeply saddened by the mounting death toll of migrants lost at sea. Once more, we learn of men, women and children dying needlessly in search of protection or a better life,” said FRA Director Michael O’Flaherty. “Concerted action by the EU and its Member States can, and would, save lives.”
Two boats floundered over the weekend in rough seas off the coast of Lampedusa. At least 30 people are thought to have drowned.
In the wake of the migrant deaths in June off Greece, FRA published guidance on how the EU and its Member States could prevent future tragedies at sea. These include more effective maritime search and rescue, enhanced protection for shipwreck survivors, and safe legal entry for migrants and refugees.
FRA’s Director will also visit Lampedusa in the coming weeks to better understand the situation on the ground, and offer its advice and assistance to Italian national and regional authorities.
