Database on anti-Muslim hatred 2018 - 2024
What?
The database provides up –to date information on hate crime, incitement to violence and hatred, hate speech, harassment and discrimination against Muslims in the EU. It provides a non-exhaustive overview of relevant international and national case law and rulings, selected research, data and statistics, as well as map-based information to help victims reach relevant support organisations.
Why?
Muslims represent the 2nd largest religious group in the EU and continue to experience racism, discrimination and harassment daily. Based on the EU survey on immigrants and descendants of immigrants (2022) the FRA report ‘Being Muslim in the EU’ shows a surge in anti-Muslim racism since 2016. ECRI states that Member States should prioritise the fight against anti-Muslim racism and take all necessary measures to combat all its public manifestations.
This database responds to the lack of systematic collection and presentation of relevant data and evidence which hampers the development of targeted, evidence-based policy responses. It supports the work of the EU High Level Group on hate speech and hate crime, the EU Commission`s coordinator on combating anti-Muslim hatred and other FRA key stakeholders, including civil society.
How?
The database is updated on bi-annual basis. FRA is collecting data through its research network Franet in the EU Member States, Albania, North Macedonia and Serbia. The database considers and builds on relevant existing initiatives at the international level, and in particular the work done by the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights. The database provides a single point of entry to:
- Cases and rulings: relevant information contained in international, European and national case law and rulings, UN human rights treaty body decisions and findings by human rights institutions, equality bodies and other human rights organisations.
- Research and data: relevant research, reports, studies, data and statistics.
- Victim support:– organisations and contact points which provide support to victims of bias motivated crimes.
Findings
It allows users to select and filter results, among others by country, year, type of incident, type of publication and data source; allowing easy access to the wealth of information collected.
The next update of the database will be published in July 2025 covering the period from January 2023 until December 2024.
