Key findings

In its annual report, MRAX publishes detailed statistics about the cases of alleged occurrences of racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism that it has opened during the year. In total, 227 cases were opened with a clear increase from previous years following the terrorist attacks in March 2016 at Zaventem airport and Maelbeek metro station. 97 were related to insults (incitement of hatred and racism), 90 related to discrimination, 19 related to harassment and 21 related to acts of violence. Of those 227 cases, 47 were based on an anti-Arab motive, 33 on an anti-black motive, 73 an anti-Islam motive and 12 on an anti-migrant motive. A new form of was identifIed in 2016, with 5 cases of anti-asian motive.

The figures are based on the data obtained throughout the year from cases of alleged occurrences of racism, xenophobia or anti-semitism opened by the MRAX during 2016.
