Key findings

The mandate of the Commissioner is a protection of the equality in Serbia, and one of its activities is conducting research and survey on the position of vulnerable and minority groups in Serbia. Commissioner found in its survey that the position of migrants in Serbia is low because perception of the Serbian population is negative about migrants. It is a relevant because a large number of migrants in Serbia are Muslims or they are coming from states with a majority Muslim population. (About statistics of a number of asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants you can find in this report: Petrović, Lena (2020), “Right to Asylum in the Republic of Serbia 2019”, Belgrade Centre for Human Rights, pp. 13-15. This report is available in English on: http://azil.rs/en/right-to-asylum-in-the-republic-of-serbia-2019/.)
The research on the attitude of citizens towards discrimination is the sixth research on this topic in the last ten years. It is especially important to point out that the last two surveys (2016 and 2019) are based on the same questionnaires, which provides insight into changes in citizens' attitudes towards discrimination in the past three years, and thus allows for relevant conclusions to be made regarding their attitudes towards discrimination. The greatest social distance was recorded towards migrants, or asylum seekers, followed by citizens of Albanian nationality (national minority). Thus, for example, in 2016, the greatest social distance was recorded towards the LGBT population, while now it is towards migrants. As many as half of the respondents expressed the opinion that they would not like migrants to hold a leading position in the country, nor to be married and have family relations with them.
