Human rights capacity support
- Does not appoint/employ an explicit human rights expert. Experts who assist members of parliament in their work are generally provided by parliamentary groups; however, the chair of the committee may call on external experts if necessary.
Functions
- The CJ is a standing committee of the Hungarian National Assembly. Standing committees are parliamentary bodies that initiate measures; express opinions and put forth proposals; make final decisions in cases set down in the law and in the provisions of the rules of procedure; and participate in monitoring the work of the government.
Specific mandates

- Hears from ministerial candidates within its scope, including the minister responsible for human rights (currently the Minister of Justice), before their appointment and annually thereafter.
- Discusses government bills on human rights and reviews relevant reports submitted to the National Assembly, including those from the judiciary and the ombudsperson.
Structured cooperation with partners at international and EU level
- Receives delegations during their official visits to Hungary (e.g. the Venice Commission, the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE Committee)).
