- Established by the government in 2015 as a direct response to the humanitarian crisis that developed in southern Europe as a consequence of mass migration from areas of conflict in the Middle East and Africa.
- Implements the EU relocation mechanism established by two Council of the EU decisions in 2015 to assist Italy and Greece.

- Overseen by a high-level government task force composed of senior staff from all key government departments, local authorities, relevant state agencies, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Irish Red Cross.
Structured cooperation with partners at international and EU level
- Represents Ireland in leading the ‘Building capacity for private sponsorship in the European Union’ (CAPS-EU) project.
- Represented Ireland as the co-chair of the UNHCR Annual Tripartite Consultations on Resettlement in 2023, together with selected non-governmental-organisations, such as Nasc.
