Human rights capacity support

  • The committee’s legal consultants have a general legal education, and more dedicated human rights capacity support is available from the parliament’s Legal Office.

Functions

  • A committee of 10 members of parliament that examines draft laws within the field of justice (e.g. the judicial system, material and procedural legal norms).
  • Provides assessments of candidates for judicial posts where the candidate has to be approved by the parliament.

Structured cooperation with partners at national level

  • Invites representatives of the relevant ministries (especially the Ministry of Justice) and experts in the field to express their opinions, either orally or in writing.
  • Cooperates with the judicial branch of government, as the head of the committee is a member of the Judicial Council.
  • Invites civil-society representatives, members of non-governmental organisations and experts in the field to its meetings.

Structured cooperation with partners at international and EU level

  • Occasionally, representatives of the committee participate in visits to the European Parliament or other EU institutions.
