Human rights capacity support

• The committee reports that there is no specific human rights work within its mandate. Most of its members are, however, also members of one of the committees with responsibility for various issues, including the Committee on the Constitution.

Functions

• Ensures government accountability in EU matters by receiving continuous updates and holding consultations before key EU decisions.
• Covers all areas of EU cooperation and provides instructions to government departments reflecting the parliament’s position in negotiations.

• The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights correspondent at the Secretariat for EU Coordination shares agency updates within parliament.
• The committee meets EU counterparts in the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for European Affairs, where rights issues are discussed.
• The committee hosts and conducts EU-related visits.
• Members of parliament engage in rights discussions via the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Joint Parliamentary Scrutiny Group on Europol, which monitors the impact on personal freedoms of the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol).
