Functions

  • The Government Office for National Minorities is an independent government office.
  • It monitors the implementation of constitutional and legislative provisions relating to the special rights of the autochthonous Italian and Hungarian national communities and the position and special rights of the Roma community in Slovenia.
  • It performs expert, administrative and technical tasks for the Government Commission for the National Communities and the Government Commission for the Protection of the Roma Community and cooperates with the Commission of the National Assembly for the National Communities.
  • It performs tasks with regard to the Italian and Hungarian national communities and the Roma community pertaining to the relevant bodies of the Council of Europe, the EU, the UN and other international organisations.

  • Cooperation with the executive branch of government is set out in formal documents such as theNational programme of measures for Roma of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for the period 2021–2030.
  • Some cooperation with civil society is reflected in the joint funding of research projects addressing the specific needs of minorities.

Structured cooperation with partners at international and EU level

  • The office regularly cooperates with the Council of Europe’s monitoring of the implementation of the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages.
