Statutory human rights body
Established on1 November 2014under the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission Act 2014, merging two former bodies, the Irish Human Rights Commission and the Equality Authority, into one.
From2 April 2025, Fiosrú has taken on the role of dealing with complaints from the public about members of the Gardaí, a role that was previously carried out by the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission. The government appointed Ms Emily Logan to be Ireland’s first Police Ombudsman, and she is supported by the Chief Executive Officer of Fiosrú, Ms Sheila McClelland.
The Electoral Reform Act 2022 provides for the establishment of an electoral commission. The Electoral Commission was formally established on 9 February 2023. It will formally take on its functions in phases.
