On 10 September, FRA will address a conference in Thessaloniki on 'The implementation of the UN CRPD by the EU: Assessing the impact of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities' concluding observations – The way forward'.
The conference has been organised by the ad Hoc group on Disability of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). This conference will be the first European event to analyse the concluding observations made by the UN's Committee for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) on the EU's report on how it is implementing the CRPD. This is the first time ever the EU has received concluding observations made by such a UN Committee. The observations follow discussions between the UN Committee and the EU monitoring framework in August on the report.
The event will particularly focus on how the concluding observations can be put into effect when adopting and reviewing EU legislation, and the impact of the economic crisis on the implementation of the UN CRPD in Europe. FRA, as member of the monitoring framework will give a speech during the panel on how the observations can be put into effect.
