The Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU will convene experts from Member States, EU institutions and other stakeholders for the Stockholm Symposium on Democracy and the Rule of Law.

The symposium intends to take stock and facilitate a constructive dialogue on the instruments to navigate towards a stronger rule of law and to counter democratic backsliding.

Swedish Minister for EU Affairs, Jessika Roswall, EU Commission Vice President Vera Jourova, Commissioner Didier Reynders and President of the Court of Justice Koen Lenaerts will all speak.

FRA will be part of a panel on what more could be done by actors beyond public authorities. It will highlight the contribution of civil society to advancing a rule of law culture by empowering citizens, advocating for the rule of law and holding public authorities accountable. It will draw on the results of FRA’s civic space monitoring, which feeds into the Commission’s annual reports on the rule of law.

The event takes place from 21 to 22 June.
