FRA took part in an expert meeting of the European Asylum Support Office (EASO), in Valletta on 9 October, on the legal aspects of assessing the age of unaccompanied minors in the asylum process.
This meeting focused on the role of the courts and judiciary, and evidence assessment. It dealt with the judicial implementation of Article 3 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in European and national jurisprudence relating to age assessment, the role of the legal guardians, and the rights and access related to appeals. The expert meeting was followed by one day of workshops exploring the impact and connection between age assessment and asylum procedures. FRA co-facilitated three workshops on accommodating age-disputed cases, children claiming to be adults and transition to adulthood. Representatives from EU Member States and Norway, and from the UN Refugee Agency and Save the Children attended the meeting.
