On 16 October 2012, FRA gave a presentation to a public hearing organised by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) on implementing and monitoring the UN Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities.
The meeting aimed to provide a deeper understanding of the Convention while looking at the implications of its implementation at EU level. It was also an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange views and discuss the EESC’s opinion on how the Convention can be properly implemented in the EU. Their opinion also seeks to explore how the EESC can fulfil its role as the representative of civil society and how it can coordinate the process of consulting civil society and organisations representing people with disabilities, and to examine how the Convention can be integrated into the EESC’s work. FRA spoke of the findings from its work on disability rights and how its evidence relates to the Convention’s implementation by EU institutions.
