FRA delivered a keynote speech at ILGA Europe’s conference entitled ‘Stepping up the fight against hate crimes - Towards an EU inclusive response to homophobic and transphobic violence and hatred’.
FRA’s speech at the event in Brussels on 10 December focused on the findings from its LGBT survey and recent transgender report as well as the purpose and planned activities of the Working Party on Improving Reporting and Recording of Hate Crime. Participants from EU and European institutions, as well as civil society, and national law schools and equality bodies gathered to discuss the current situation regarding homophobic and transphobic hate crimes in the EU. The discussions explored the effectiveness of national protection systems in guarding against hate crime and how they could be improved. They also addressed the need for an EU level response and examined possible ways forward.
