FRA’s new Director takes up the reins

On 16 December, a new era begins for FRA as Michael O’Flaherty starts work as its new Director, keen to engage with partners and stakeholders, actively taking part in the Agency’s Management Board meeting and in a public round table event welcoming him to Vienna.

These are challenging times, in which we must remain firm in our human rights resolve. The Fundamental Rights Agency has a critical role to play and I take on the position of its director with a determination to ensure that it will deliver on its responsibility.

"The Agency has built up an impressive body of knowledge and expertise. This work is of critical importance to support the EU institutions and Member States in finding sustainable solutions to the fundamental rights challenges in the EU today. I look forward to continue strengthening the impact of the FRA outputs whereby they contribute to the strengthening of fundamental rights protection in very concrete and practical terms.

"I firmly believe in the importance of building alliances and working closely with FRA’s many partners and networks. Together we must build a culture of human rights that is embedded in the Charter of Fundamental Rights and the other European and international human rights obligations. On this basis and in respect for our various competencies, we all working together will ensure societies that are open and inclusive and that promote, respect and protect all human rights for all.
