Monitoring democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights

On 10 December in Brussels, the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee gathered experts from the European Commission, FRA, the Council of Europe and the Bingham Centre for a hearing on how to best monitor democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights.

The Committee is discussing the idea of a mechanism that would allow the Parliament to regularly assess Member States’ continued compliance with the EU’s fundamental values and to ensure that democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights are respected in the EU. For a brainstorming in this regard the experts presented their experiences in this area which will feed into a report that is being drafted by the European Parliament.
