Advancing human rights in the era of Big Data

The Agency gave a presentation at an informal roundtable discussion in Brussels on 27 January on the human rights implications of the use of Big Data.

Participants from businesses, business associations, EU and UN bodies discussed potential benefits for and threats to human rights in the era of Big Data.

Participants shared views on and examples of the use of Big Data for advancing human rights and also highlighted the increased potential for threats to human rights, such as issues related to data protection and non-discrimination. There was consensus – also put forward in the FRA presentation – that the use of Big Data in a fundamental rights compliant manner needs strong cooperation of experts with different backgrounds including law, computer science, statistics and subject matter fields as well as different institutions.

The event was organised by CSR Europe and Microsoft.
