The FRA Director met high-level officials in Sofia from 19 to 20 September to further strengthen the Agency’s cooperation with Bulgaria in light of the future Bulgarian EU Presidency that will start in January 2018.
While there he met with the Minister of Labour and Social Policy, the Deputy Interior, Justice and Foreign Affairs Ministers and other ministry officials. He also met representatives from the child protection, people with disabilities, and refugee agencies, and from the Committee against Discrimination and the National Council for Cooperation on Ethnic and Integration Issues and the Bulgarian Ombudsman.
The possibility of FRA contributions to the work of preparatory bodies of the Council Presidency and joint events on such issues as Roma inclusion, and e-justice were explored during the meetings. Cooperating on topics such as child rights, independent living for people with disabilities and gender-based violence was also raised.
During the visit, the FRA Director also gave a public lecture on hate crime attended by representatives of non-governmental organisations, academia, the public administration, independent experts and others.
