FRA pays tribute to Stefano Rodotà, first Chairman of its Scientific Committee

With deep regret, the Fundamental Rights Agency has learned of the passing of Stefano Rodotà. Former 
President 
of
 the 
Italian 
Data 
Protection 
Commission 
and 
of 
the 
European 
Group 
on
 Data 
Protection, Professor Rodotà was a passionate defender of privacy rights.

He was one of the authors of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, an instrument that has contributed to improving the fundamental rights of millions of people across the EU.

Stefano Rodotà had an impressive academic career. He was Professor emeritus of law at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” and Professor at the Institute for Human Sciences in Firenze. He taught
 at
numerous universities,
 including 
the 
Universities
 of 
Paris, 
Frankfurt, 
Strasbourg, 
Edinburgh, Barcelona, 
Lima, 
Caracas, 
Rio
 de 
Janeiro, 
Mexico 
City, 
as 
well 
as 
Oxford
 and 
Stanford 
Law School. Aside from his academic career, Stefano Rodotà
 was a
 former 
Member 
of 
the 
Italian
 Parliament, of the 
European 
Parliament, and 
of 
the 
Parliamentary 
Assembly 
of 
the 
Council 
of 
Europe. The Fundamental Rights Agency would like to acknowledge Stefano Rodotà’s valuable contribution to the work of the Agency’s Scientific Committee, and sends its sincere condolences to his family.
