National Preventive Mechanisms discuss building a comparative tool on detention conditions

The Agency hosted a meeting of National Preventive Mechanisms on 3 October where creating a comparative tool on detention conditions was discussed.

FRA presented its current project on criminal detention in the EU. There were discussions on monitoring places of detention and the indicators on the particular conditions that might violate the prohibition of torture and inhuman and degrading treatment. Participants discussed possibilities and necessities of creating a comparative tool on detention conditions and the human rights implications. There were participants from 15 European countries and representatives of international bodies such as Council of Europe, European Commission, and Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and Ludwig Boltzman Institute.
