The Agency contributed a paper to the UN’s public consultation on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
The challenges and opportunities in core areas identified by the UN’s independent expert in this area were then discussed in Geneva on 24 and 25 January at an expert meeting. The discussions drew on the contributions from the consultation. They covered such issues as decriminalisation, destigmatisation, legal recognition of gender identity, cultural inclusion with gender-and-sexual diversity, and empathy particularly towards trans and intersex people.
During the meeting, the Agency presented its work and spoke of on the legal gaps in protecting transgender and intersex people, and the need to develop responses that correspond to the specific needs of the diverse LGBTI groups.
