Sustainable Development Goals and the CRPD – the role of disabled persons organisations and NHRIs

The Agency co-hosted an event on the role of disabled persons organisations and national human rights institutions in implementing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and its Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

The event on 25 August in Geneva was co-hosted with the Global alliance of national human rights institutions and the International Disability Alliance.

FRA’s intervention focused on three important elements of effective monitoring: common understandings of key concepts; research and data collection, including indicators; and accessible complaints mechanisms. Many participants called for the collection and sharing of best practices on such aspects as data collection and involving disabled persons organisations in decisions about people with disabilities, a requirement of the CRPD. There were also discussions on the different interpretations of accessibility, special measures and reasonable accommodation.
