Greek Ombudsman event focuses on forced return monitoring

On 26 November, the Agency spoke during at an event organised by the Greek Ombudsman on forced return monitoring.

In 2017, the Ombudsman monitored 40 return operations. The main issues included the systematic use of velcro strips for all people subject to readmissions to Turkey; lack of timely information to the returnee, communication and interpretation difficulties; issues with medical cases and the use of old and inappropriate buses for returns to Albania.

FRA underlined the good cooperation between the Ombudsman and the Hellenic Police and commended the Ombudsman for its valuable work. FRA noted that in several EU Member States forced return monitoring is supported by EU funds on a project basis. It also called for the need to ensure continuity when the funding cycle comes to an end.
