FRA joins the VIS Fundamental Rights Guidance Board

FRA will become a member of the Visa Information System Fundamental Rights Guidance Board.

The recast Visa Information System (VIS) Regulation established a role for FRA within the Board.

The Board will help ensure that fundamental rights are respected when screening VIS applications according to specific risk indicators.

VIS is one of the EU’s large-scale information technology systems. It aims to facilitate the visa application procedure. VIS also serves as an ancillary system for asylum, immigration control and security-related purposes.

FRA's 2018 opinion on the proposed recast analysed the fundamental rights implications of the proposal.

FRA already has a similar role in the Fundamental Rights Guidance Board for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS).
