Practical exercises for labour inspectors to safeguard workers’ rights

Labour inspectors can play a crucial role in protecting migrant workers from exploitation and abuse. New practical exercises and training guides from the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) will support inspectors in safeguarding non-EU workers’ rights.

The practical exercises complement FRA’s training manual for labour inspectors. They are designed to support labour inspectors in putting the manual and its recommendations into practice.

The exercises focus on:

  1. Speaking with migrant workers during inspections;
  2. Providing information;
  3. Supporting access to justice and issuing/ making formal complaints;
  4. Identifying labour exploitation;
  5. Right to backpay and compensation;
  6. Right to adequate housing and the right to change employer.

FRA is also publishing practical guides to support labour inspectors in delivering trainings based on FRA’s training manual for labour inspectors.

These manuals, exercises and guides form part of FRA’s ongoing work on labour exploitation.

Previously, the Agency published reports on the role of the Employers Sanctions Directive in protecting migrants from labour exploitation  and the workers’ perspectives on migrant labour exploitation in the EU.
