FRA Director gives keynote speech on Artificial Intelligence and meets the European University Institute President

On 15 May, FRA’s Director Sirpa Rautio gave a keynote speech at the University of Florence during a conference on the future of democracy in the digital era. The Director called for the development of a trustworthy, human-rights compliant technology.

She stressed that freedom of speech does not give anyone the right to harass women, spread antisemitic speech or incite hate against minorities. She emphasised that we need effective content moderation to ensure a safer online space for all and that, to avoid manipulation, we need to step up our efforts to protect free and democratic elections.

On 16 May, the Director met with the President of the European University Institute, Professor Patrizia Nanz. Since 2012, FRA and the Institute have been holding a cooperation agreement allowing researchers from the Institute to visit FRA for short visits.

At the meeting, they exchanged views on current developments and committed to look into enhancing current cooperation.
