Europol’s Data Protection Experts Network (EDEN) and the Academy of European Law (ERA) are hosting a conference in the Hague from 22 to 23 November on freedom and security.

It seeks to challenge the perception that greater freedom means less security and greater security equals less freedom.

The Agency will take part in a panel discussion that will focus on data protection in the context of cooperation between law enforcement and intelligence services. It will present findings from its report on ‘Surveillance by intelligence services: fundamental rights safeguards and remedies in the EU’.

The panel aims to build bridges between stakeholders to enable the right choices on issues such as encryption and confidentiality of communication, purpose limitation and effectiveness of measures, bulk surveillance and deployment of the appropriate resources for independent and effective oversight.
