The agency will contribute to discussions on promoting and protecting the rights of suspects and the accused in criminal proceedings during a meeting from 12 to 13 February in Budapest.

It will share its perspectives and practices around the challenges and opportunities in using EU law for promoting and protecting rights and on cooperation with other national human rights institutions, international governmental organisations, lawyers and civil society.

NHRIs play an important role in strengthening the rights of suspects and accused and, ultimately, prevent ill-treatment. Moreover, due to their broad mandate, NHRIs could not only act as a bridge between EU institutions and the national level but also reinforce and complement the work of other domestic actors.

The meeting is being organised by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights (BIM) - in cooperation with Hungarian Helsinki Committee (Hungary), Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (Poland) and Peace Institute (Slovenia). It is being convened in the context of their project on the role of National Human Rights Institutions in strengthening the rights of people suspected or accused in criminal proceedings.
