Penitentiary Principles Act (Penitentiaire beginselenwet)The prisoner is entitled to the care of a physician or a substitute physician connected with the institution. A prisoner should have access to a dentist and a psychiatrist connected with the institution. The governor of the institution shall provide that the prisoner is provided with the drugs and diets prescribed by the physician connected with the institution, the prisoner is given the treatment on the direction of the physician, the prisoner is transferred to a hospital or other establishment for the treatment prescribed by the physician.

2021Over 2021, the joint inspections [Health and Youth Care Inspectorate and Inspectorate of Justice and Security], concluded that the quality of care in the different penitentiary institutions is being increasingly pressured. Reasons that play an important role are the increased labour market shortage, the complication of problems of youths and pressured staff capacity. In addition, the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate sees that the ageing population issue is present in different sectors in different degrees. Report details
