Description
The National Observatory on the Condition of Persons with Disabilities (Osservatorio nazionale sulla condizione delle persone con disabilità) was set up in 2008 to monitor the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Italy. The observatory’s tasks include:
- promoting the implementation of the convention and preparing detailed reports on the measures taken in liaison with the Interministerial Committee for Human Rights;
- preparing a three-year programme of action for promoting the rights and integration of persons with disabilities through the implementation of national and international legislation;
- promoting the collection of statistical data illustrating the condition of persons with disabilities;
- preparing reports on the state of the implementation of disability policies at the country level;
- promoting the performance of studies and research that may contribute to identifying priority areas for direct action and intervention.
The observatory’s composition represents both institutional bodies and civil-society organisations representing persons with disabilities, and relevant stakeholders (trade unions, municipalities, the National Labour Inspectorate, the National Institute of Statistics, the National Institute for Social Security, etc.).
