Key findings
Overall, the survey responses show that 84 % of people belonging to ethnic minorities report that they have experienced discrimination and prejudice because of their ethnic background. For many, this is not a single incident, but repeated negative experiences across the labour market, in public spaces and in contact with authorities. People belonging to ethnic minorities with visible expressions that can distinguish them from the rest of the population (such as long beards and headscarves) are more likely to report experiencing discrimination and prejudice. 48 % of those who have applied for something report that they have been rejected because of their ethnic background. This particularly applies to jobs, training, housing and banking. 55 % of people belonging to ethnic minorities report that because of their ethnic background they have changed their behaviour in public spaces. Many adapt how they walk, speak or appear or avoid speaking their family's native language in public spaces. Several report that they have changed their name or avoid wearing religious symbols. The discrimination and prejudice has caused around one in three to consider leaving Denmark.
